FOB implies the seller’s responsibility ends at the nearest port, where the buyer can collect or engage a freight forwarder for shipping. Clearing goods for export falls to the seller, while the buyer assumes responsibility from the port onward. Confirm the specific port when obtaining FOB quotes. This widely used term facilitates third-party inspections at the export port, simplifies division of responsibilities, and allows convenient pickup by freight forwarders near the port.
CIF (Cost Insurance and Freight) is akin to the previous term, but the Buyer demands the Seller assumes risk and secure insurance until the destination port; in brief the Seller is responsible for export customs clearance when the goods are being shipped from his/her country. The Buyer is responsible for import customs clearance at the destination port and handles duty payment. CIF is primarily applicable for water transport, similar to CIP.
Delivered at Place (DAP) entails the seller delivering goods to the buyer’s specified destination. The seller bears shipping risks, loading or hiring a third party for shipment. The buyer is responsible for customs fees, clearance, and unloading at the final destination.
Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) implies the seller assumes full responsibility and covers all costs. The buyer’s sole obligation is to unload goods at the chosen destination. Although DDP provides convenience, it may not be the most cost-effective option as the seller selects the shipping company based on preference, not necessarily cost or reliability. Comparing quotes for DDP, FOB, and freight forwarders is recommended to assess the overall pricing.
